NFPA 59A: 2016 Edition (Latest)

NFPA 59A is the standard for the production, storage, and handling of liquefied natural gas (LNG). This is the latest 2016 edition, which was prepared by the Technical Committee on Liquefied Natural Gas and supersedes all previous editions. This standard was first developed in 1960 and submitted to NFPA for approval in the autumn of 1964. The first official edition was adopted in 1967. Subsequent editions include the edition of 1971, 1972, 1975, 1979, 1985, 1990, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2006, 2009, and 2013.

The 2016 edition of NFPA 59A covers the following contents:

  • Chapter 1 Administration: scope, purpose, equivalency, retroactivity, SI units, pressure measurement, referenced standards.
  • Chapter 2 Referenced Publications: general, NFPA publications, other publications, references for extracts in mandatory sections.
  • Chapter 3 Definitions: general, NFPA official definitions, general definitions.
  • Chapter 4 General Requirements: scope, corrosion control overview, control center, sources of power, records, noncombustible material, ignition source control.
  • Chapter 5 Plant Siting and Layout: scope, plant site provisions, site provisions for spill and leak control, buildings and structures, designer and fabricator competence, soil protection for cryogenic equipment, falling ice and snow, concrete design and materials, portable LNG facility.
  • Chapter 6 Process Equipment: scope, installation of process equipment, pumps and compressors, flammable refrigerant and flammable liquid storage, process equipment.
  • Chapter 7 Stationary LNG Storage: scope, general, design considerations, tank systems, ASME containers designed for operation at more than 15 psi (103 kPa).
  • Chapter 8 Vaporization Facilities: scope, classification of vaporizers, design and materials for construction, vaporizer piping, intermediate fluid piping, and storage valves, relief devices on vaporizers, combustion air supply, products of combustion.
  • Chapter 9 Piping Systems and Components: scope, general, materials of construction, installation, pipe supports, piping identification, inspection, examination, and testing of piping, purging of piping systems, safety and relief valves, corrosion control, cryogenic pipe-in-pipe systems.

  • Chapter 11 Transfer Systems for LNG, Refrigerants, and Other Flammable Fluids: scope, general requirements, piping system, pump and compressor control, marine shipping and receiving, tank vehicle and tank car loading and unloading facilities, pipeline shipping and receiving, hoses and arms, communications and lighting.
  • Chapter 12 Fire Protection, Safety, and Security: scope, general, emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, gas, fire, and leak detection, fire protection water systems, fire extinguishing and other fire control equipment, personnel safety, security.
  • Chapter 13 Requirements of Stationary Applications Using ASME containers: scope, general requirements, containers, container filling, container foundations and supports, container installation, automatic product retention valves, LNG spill containment, inspection, shop testing of LNG containers, shipment of LNG containers, field testing of LNG containers, welding of containers, piping, container instrumentation, fire protection and safety, gas detection, operations and maintenance.
